FOOTY JAPAN KNOCKOUT CUP 05/06

Friday, 29th June, Legends Sports Bar Roppongi,
Whether drowning sorrows or celebrating victories there was certainly a lot of booze flowing at the Tokyo Metropolis League's end-of-season BBQ Party and Award Ceremony, attended by more than 250 of the leagues faithfuls - including some notable TML & Footy Japan sponsors/supporters: Mark & Mary Devlin from Metropolis, Nick Johnston from Wall Street Associates, Gregory Glanzmann from BMW, Yuji from Footnik (soon to be opening in Osaki) and James Oakes from new supporters Gaba - who we'd like to thank for coming along presenting awards and generally putting up with a bunch of roudy, pissed-up lads. more ...

Eternal Sun Shane of the Spot Kick Mind

Hachioji Park, Sun 17th June. The 1980 Olympic Ice Hockey Finals, Buster Douglas versus Mike Tyson, Inverness Caledonian Thistle versus Celtic, and now The Footy Japan Plate Final.  Sport has always been the theatre of the bizarre, the extreme and the upset.
Against the odds, and the league table, Shane FC produced an outstanding team performance to defeat the second division champions BEFC 4-2 on penalties in Hachioji Koen on Saturday. more...

Misato, Sat 9th June. A determined Wall Street Geckoes team emerged comfortable victors over a dispirited Sala FC, in the final of the Wall Street Associates/Footy Japan Cup, played on a bumpy field in Misato on Saturday. more...

Sala Finally Break Hibs Jinx

Hachioji Park, Sat 28th April. On a beautiful spring morning at Hachioji Sala FC finally accomplished two things that had been a long time coming – beating Hibs and advancing to the final of the Cup. Hibs have been somewhat of a bogey team for Sala over the past few seasons, the main reason being their inability to find a way past the intimidating figure of Hitoshi in goals. At the station he looks much like any other bloke but upon donning the orange jersey and stepping across the white line he suddenly becomes an 8 foot tall colossus capable of denying the best strikers in Japan, all of whom happen to play for Sala. more...

Misato, Sunday 22nd April. Bob Dylan once sang, "The answers my friend, are blowing in the wind."  Well, it was mainly plastic bags and sand that were blowing in Misato on Sunday as Shane FC took on Armanis for a place in the final of the Footy Japan Plate.

The teams took to the field in what footy parlance would be referred to as 'blustery conditions'.  Indeed, straight from the kick-off, Armanis rather wisely adopted the Pele tactic of blasting the ball from the half way line, causing no end of problems for the Shane defence. more...

GOLD

Misato, Sat 21st April. The Geckoes took on BFC in the first of the Footy Japan Cup Semi Finals at Misato on Saturday. Even though BFC started the game with just 11 players and one of them was hungover, as runaway league leaders they were very much the favourites for the match and were no doubt expecting an easy route to the final. more...

Oi Futo, Thursday 15th March. A bare-bones BFC were knocked out of the Footy Japan Cup in the semi-finals after a 2-1 defeat by a determined Geckoes side. A horrible pitch, no subs and a dodgy golden goal winner were no excuse.
Geckoes simply wanted it more and good luck to them. more...

Uniting for UNICEF

YC&AC, Wednesday 21st March. 19-teams, a notable number of which were not from the Tokyo Metropolis League, took to the YC&AC turf at the crack of dawn on Wednesday March 21st, 2007, to do battle in the 3rd Footy Japan/YC&AC Charity 6’s Football Tournament. more...

Oi Futo, Thursday 15th March. Proving it was just the luck of the draw, the Semi Final pairings of BFC vs Geckoes & Sala vs Hibs was made by members of the OiFuto Chusen squad (whilst unsuccessfully trying to book grounds!) .
Even then, to the chagrin of the Hibs leader, humerous emails were sent amongst TML captains joking that Sala had once again got the easiest draw (given recent results!) Well let's see shall we!

BFC Go Logo in Tough Vags Win

Oi Futo 1, Sat 3rd March. Two goals from captain Jon Day and a long-range blast from new boy Garry Robertson gave freshly logo-ed BFC a hard-earned 3-1 win over BFC Vagabonds in the Footy Japan Cup quarter-finals.
BFC survived a couple of scares, not least the sight of Maz in TIGHTS, but overall a fair result which was followed by an all-too-rare inter-club izakaya session. Lovely jubbly  more ...

Misato, Sun 25th Feb. For the first time in 2007 the Geckoes were able to have a mostly full strength squad for the Footy Japan Cup game v the Kanto Celts. In what was expected to be a close game, the Geckoes were after revenge for their 2-1 reversal a few weeks ago and were somewhat pleased to see that a few of the Celts had been out to watch the rugby the previous night.  more ...

Some of it Sticks for BEFC

Oi Futo 1, Sat 17th Feb. Throw enough sh!t at a wall and some of it will stick, as the old adage goes.  This was obviously an approach that the Embassy had chosen to adopt on Saturday as they squared up to Zion FC in the first round of the Plate Competition.  And when the final whistle finally sounded and the last of the Oifuto dirt had settled they had amassed an impressive haul of four goals to Zion’s one.  However, there was certainly a lot of sh!t flung at the Zion goal in the process.  more ...

Hibs move onto Semifinal

Oi Futo 2, Sat 11th Feb. Late Sunday night at Oifuto, Swiss and Hibs lined up for their quarterfinal of the Cup – no one there to see a game that was billed as “one of the biggest games of the season”.  It is immensely convenient that the league organizer – of Sala - scheduled it as a quarterfinal thus easing his team’s entry into a semi-final as they are likely to beat middle of the 2nd division Mauritzio; but, it is the Cup and you do have to beat everyone to win it, some just have an easier path than others. more from Swiss ...

You can’t win the league with kids…

Oi Futo 1, Sat 10th Feb. Sala eased into the semi-finals of the cup with a convincing 4-1 scoreline over Maritizio, but the performance left a bit to be desired.
Star striker Bedingfield was left on the bench for this one, as he still hadn’t quite finished off scoring his goal from last week’s game against the Celts.
Toby and Giles started up top and quickly proved once again the inordinate amount of Football wisdom lurking under Guido’s thick locks. more ...

Tokyo, Thu 19th Jan. The quarter-final round of the Footy Japan Cup will see one of Hibs or current holders Swiss Kickers eliminated. Both team would've fancied their chances of progressing on to the finals of this competition, but this will not come to pass. With YCAC knocked out of the cup competition early on, there's a sense amongst the other finalists that there's everything to play for. In one interesting draw BFC will go up against their very own second team BFC Vagabonds in a match that will undoubtedly see no holds barred. The recent form of Maritizio will certainly give Sala lots to think about in their quarter-final match-up and Celts vs. Geckoes could well be one of the games of the season. Full draw ...

Suzuki Drives Swiss Home.

photoOi Chou Rinkai Koen, Sunday, 7th January 2007. 24 teams, many playing outside the Tokyo Metropolis League, converged on the Oifuto Astroturf to do battle in what is set to become one of the biggest Footy Japan organized tournaments on the annual calendar. YCAC, the Swiss, Hibs, Sala and BFC arrived fielding notably strong squads, but due to the expansive size of the pitches (causing the 3/4 sized goals to appear as mere specks on the horizon at times) any of the teams who capitalized on their goal-scoring chances, sporadic as they might be, would have a good chance of leaving the competition clutching silverware. more ...

Hachioji Park, Sat 16th Dec. The last TML game for the Jets before the Winter break was a Cup fixture against the league leading Tokyo Hibs. Would this match be a precursor to the Internacional –Barca World Club Cup upset or Gutrot’s West Ham’s unlikely win against Man U? Well, unfortunately, the Jets were without our #1 keeper Kosuke, our two central defenders, several useful midfielders, and last year’s leading striker. more from Jets ...

Tomo Strike Sees Hibs Past Jets.

Hachioji Park, Sat 16th Dec. The Jets were well up for this game with the opportunity to progress in the cup clearly a prize worth getting stuck in for. They had a fit and physical squad who did not give an inch and worked their socks off all game. The Hibs have played probably 5 or 6 games at Hachioji and we had yet to put in a performance that we were happy with. more from Hibs ...

Todoroki, Sun 10th Dec. The Geckoes took the field against Zion on Sunday, Dec. 10th for a first round Footy Japan Cup match. The field being a nice grass surface at Todoroki, however unfortunately because of work being done to one side of the field the pitch was effectively cut in half which made it very narrow and difficult to have any width at all. more ...

Vags Claw Way Back to Cup Victory.

Clarke Robertson throws his weight around.

OiFuto, Sun 10th Dec. Somebody else is down to write the official report but I was moved (after 8 beers) to write something myself about today’s adventure at oi futo.

The pitch had the consistency of recently poured concrete in places but elsewhere was truer than expected. Last week Vags beat Barbs in the league, with some to spare by all accounts, and a win today a foregone conclusion in most minds. more ...

'Ave it!!' Rob manager tries a volley, but it ends up as a space mission.

Misato, Sun 3rd Dec. The Geckoes kicked off their cup campaign with a fine win over Division 2 strugglers Armanis on Sunday afternoon. The game started at a fast pace and the first goal came within 3 minutes as the Geckoes central defender rose like a Salmon to head the ball home from a corner past the stunned keeper and defender on the line.
Unfortunately no-one had pointed out to Ian that we were actually kicking the other way - So for the second game in a row, the Geckoes needed to come behind to get the win. more ...

YC&AC Leave AFC Wandering

YC&AC, Sun 26th Nov. AFC played this cup game with a noticeably weakened team and despite battling admirably from start to finish were overcome by an “experimental” YCAC side. YCAC veteran Damian Hart was dropped after provocatively arriving at the game in a pair of tight crocodile skin trousers (this is not a joke - for the love of God why?) as the talented but raw Steve Taw replaced him in the centre of defence (if that is the right word). more ...

Todoroki, Sat 18th Nov. At a charming Todoroki park (sans penalty boxes and symmetrical goalposts) on Saturday night, Sala came up against a team named after a theoretical pre-historic super-continent for the first time in club history.
On the day, captain Guido chose to spectate rather than play, mainly due to the grotesque swelling in his lower legs which has caused his shin pads to stretch so much, that they have become virtually unusable. more ...

Big Guns to Face Off in FJ Cup.

Tokyo, Tues 7th Nov. 20 teams this year will do battle in the 4th Footy Japan Wall Street Associates Cup - 19 of them will be gunning to stop the Swiss Kickers claiming the cup for a fourth consecutive time. The Swiss will meet the winner of the preliminary match up between YCAC 1st XI and AFC Wanderers meaning that one of the big guns will be departing the tournament early doors. With the losers of the preliminary and first round games going into a Plate competition there's a lot more football to be played in this season's cup competition. more ...

Kanda University Sun 8th October 2006. A strong typhoon that brought days of rain, did enough damage to cause the Footy 7's & 6's to be cancelled. This year both tournaments had been relegated to the dirt pitch at KUIS, due to more space being required for childrens games. With a constant barrage of rain on the preceding Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, the pitch was a muddy quagmire and a decision to cancel had to be made. Of course after the cancellation, 'Sod's Law' kicked in and it was sunny all weekend and the Scottish Games themselves went ahead, albeit in gale force winds that flattened tents & sent up dust clouds. Hopefully by next year, KUIS will have an artificial pitch so cancellation won't come into the equation. To make up for the missed 7's, Footy Japan has decided to organize a New Years 7's on the beautiful new turf pitch at Oi Futo on January 7th. For all the info click here.
