FOOTY JAPAN NEWS

Patana International School, Bangkok. May 31st~June 1st.
Footy Japan played the all star in our first game, very entertaining with Jun receiving a black eye from Viv Anderson, Peter Reid calling the shots for them...

The highlight for me was nut megging Ian Rush and being called a Jammy bustard by another player, we had a great first half but eventually went down 2-0. more

Panthers Wait for 11 to Pounce

Hachioji Koen, Sat 7th June.
The final finally arrived after a few changes and postponements, we had got there. Not bad for our first season!
We all arrived, uncharacteristically, early at the station, eager to play the final of the Plate. We were so early that the other team didn’t turn up for another 2 hours!

Thinking that we had won without even playing we got down to using the lovely pitch at Hachioji park and set out a 9 aside game for fun. The opposing team turned up with 8 players and we decided to get started. more

Hong Kong Football Club May 23rd ~ 25th.
The Footy Japan International 7's squad, newly sponsored by Robert Walters, made it's first foray into the Hong Kong 7's, only to be shown a lesson in masters football. The competition has 2 categories, Open - with teams like Aston Villa, West Ham, Celtic & Urawa Reds - and Over 40 masters, with Rangers All Stars (Mark Walters, Alex Rae, Gordon Durie) Southhampton (Paul Jones, Nayim) and Barclays All Stars (Ruel Fox, Ken Monkou & Marcus Gayle). more

Oops, No Double for BFC

Nagahama Koen, Sun 1st.
As double bids go, BFC's attempt to add the Footy Japan Cup to their TML title went very badly, ending in a 5-0 humping by Tokyo Hibernian.

Without taking away from a deserved Hibs win, only a brilliantly taken third goal was truly worthy of a final between the TML's top two teams. more

Hachioji Park, Sat 26th April.
No less than twenty League places and 3 Divisions separate these two teams, and for long periods of this semifinal you'd have to say that it looked like it.   But at the end of the game only a single controversial goal settled affairs in favour of the 1st Division side and so a very fine cup run for YCAC2nds finally came to an end. more

BFC Book Place in Final.

Hachioji Park, Sat 26th April.
Two goals from Keisuke propelled BFC to a 3-1 win over Sala, sending them into the Footy Japan Cup final and keeping them on course for the double.

BFC even spotted Sala a head-start, courtesy of some batty defending. As sweet a corner as it was from the right, Toby Long could have brewed a cup of Earl Grey and cracked open the Garibaldis such was the time he was afforded to head Sala in front, albeit somewhat against the run of play. more

Footy Japan / YC&AC Charity 6's Football Tournament in aid of UNICEF.
PHOTO GALLERY NOW UP!

Sunday, April 13th 2008.
Torrential rain was responsible for the postponement of this tournament from its scheduled date of March 20th and mother nature nearly dealt Kanto's amateur international football community, the benefactors behind the event and UNICEF, the recipients, another blow by once again allowing the heavens to open up. more

Cup-tie Rule Sees BFC Through to Semi-Finals.

Tokyo, Wed 9th April.
Having beaten BFC 2-1 in the FJ cup quarter finals on Saturday, April 5th at Oi Futo, the Swiss were forced to relinquish their semi-final spot to their British adversaries due to one of their players having played for another team in the same competition - in strict contravention of the tournaments rules. more

Misato, Sun 5th April.
A generous cloud of dust, 1000 bobbles, 5 yellow cards, two moments of skill, one ludicrous goal, a mental linesman and a patridge in a pear tree. It would be enough for this not-so-roving reporter to leave it at that and our readers would get the general idea of what happened at Misato in this rumbunctious cup tie. more

Swiss Through - But at What Price?

OiFuto 1, Sat 4th April.
BFC vs. the Swiss in the quarterfinals  of the Cup , a quality match up of the top of the league side vs. a potent (yet inconsistent) Swiss side.  The result was was an intense game with numerous chances but solid defending and goal keeping meant a lone mistake would cost the match.  The lineups at the start were a bit of a surprise with the BFC missing their captain Jon, big Al, and Shosuke yet their replacements were some awfully young players from Carlos' stable in  Chofu .   As the game started you saw little drop in quality and the  youngsters' speed was  clearly an  advantage. more

Misato, Sun 5th April.
The wind and tumbleweed blew around on a typically blustery day out at Misato where the 3rd division Panthers faced BEFC. Looking around at the beginning of the match we were daunted at the prospect of playing a division 1 team without having any subs on the bench! more

Geckoes Start on a High

YC&AC, Sun 16th March. The Geckoes kicked off their defence of the Footy Japan cup with a convincing win over Maritizio at YCAC on Sunday afternoon. Both teams struggled at first as they tried to work out how you could play football on the moon like surface but it wasn’t long before the Geckoes were in front. The ball was worked down the left and Jonathan Smith played a nice one two with Paul on the edge of the box before burying it into the bottom corner. more

Misato, Sat 15th February.
After a full day of rain on the Friday the omens were not looking good for this 2nd Round cup game against the Celts which had already had 2 previous cancellations once due to snow and the other due to gale force winds. Late on Friday night the message went out the game was almost certainly going to be cancelled (96.7% chance of cancellation read the skippers e-mail) - some took this as a green light to get on it in a big way - others reasoned that the 3.3% chance of it being on was enough of a possibility that the slippers should stay firmly on. How right the optimists were, because Saturday morning came around and it was warm, bright and wonderfully sunny - it was game on at the third time of asking.  more

Sala Dominate Jets Again.

Hachioji Park, Sun 24th February.
Sala, not for the first time, complained that the Saitama Jets are dirty and based on the evidence after the game they were correct – only one Jets player took a shower, compared to most of the Sala squad. more

YC&AC, Sun 24th February. Following up on the previous week’s disaster at Todoroki, February 24th was another day for calamity football, only this time the wind was stronger.  I’m not sure how to describe a game when one of the highlights was a goal kick nearly being blown back for a corner kick.  more

YCAC 2nds 'Handed' Victory Over Zion.

YC&AC, Sun 17th Feb. YCAC 2nds progressed to the Quarter Finals of the Cup following a hard-working and disciplined performance, beating Zion 4-2 at Yokohama.  Early in the first-half a handball led to a penalty kick and the vistors being reduced to 10 men. more

YCAC overcame NSP - a team who's joint age didn't come anywhere close to makeshift YCAC keeper and stalwart defender Steve Taw's age, and went on to beat Hellcats - an extremely vocal team with a Japanese Ronaldinho look-and-play-alike, 2-1, to claim the prestigious Cup in the Footy Japan / IFG Asia New Year soccer 7's, 2008. more

1 WASn't Enough

Yoyogi, Sat 8th December. An ultimately disappointing FJ Cup debut for W.A.S from the Setagaya league ended in a 3-1 defeat to FC. Fantasista at Yoyogi Park on Saturday.

Not even the all day trance party going on next to the ground could help either team really get their groove on during a first half of relative domination from W.A.S. W.A.S fielded 3 debutants for this match and the early stages of the first half saw some nice passing from both sides but with little thrust. more

YC&AC, Sun 9th December. God appeared to me outside the Breezeway Bar on Sunday afternoon.
"4-1. Good win, Skip" "Thanks G. They weren't up to much though were they?" "Suppose not. I must have put H Utd on earth for a purpose, but jiggered if I can recall what it was" more

Massacre at Misato

Misato, Sun 25th Nov. On an picture perfect day at Misato fields on the 25th of November Zion FC faced off against The Wall Street Clash in the opening round of the F.J Cup on an unseasonably warm day that saw no clouds in the sky and temperatures sitting comfortably in the early 20's. The hot and cold Zion FC were looking to put the agony of their previous 6-0 drubbing from JETRO FC in their last league match behind them as they faced up against another team struggling to find consistency, The Wall Street Clash. more
PB.

YC&AC, Sun 25th Nov. It's interesting how the odd result can have a big impact on promotion and relegation issues.  The last time these 2 teams played each other was last season in TML Div. 2, when the BEFC ran out 2-1 winners in a close game and of course went on to win promotion to Division 1.  YCAC2 meanwhile didn't make the cut last season and ended up in the new Division 3.  So although on paper this was a Division 1 versus Division 3 cup fixture, we were reasonably confident of giving a good account of ourselves. more

Celts Cup Cheer.

YC&AC, Sat 24th Nov. 3.00 Saturday afternoon, sun shining, grass pitch, cup football where even the losers are guaranteed another crack at qualifying for the 2nd round. Does it get better than this? In the commercially greedy TML where fixtures are arranged for prime time viewing in Misato usually Sunday bright and early this was a rare opportunity to enjoy football at the traditional kick off. more

Friday, 29th June, Legends Sports Bar Roppongi,
Whether drowning sorrows or celebrating victories there was certainly a lot of booze flowing at the Tokyo Metropolis League's end-of-season BBQ Party and Award Ceremony, attended by more than 250 of the leagues faithfuls - including some notable TML & Footy Japan sponsors/supporters: Mark & Mary Devlin from Metropolis, Nick Johnston from Wall Street Associates, Gregory Glanzmann from BMW, Yuji from Footnik (soon to be opening in Osaki) and James Oakes from new supporters Gaba - who we'd like to thank for coming along presenting awards and generally putting up with a bunch of roudy, pissed-up lads. more ...
